![]() BAKER LEAVES GIANTS, WILL MANAGE DEMS San Fran - (GNS) - Dusty Baker, former manager of the pennant-winning San Francisco Giants Starring Barry Bonds, will replace Dusty Gephardt as the new manager of the Democrats. Baker had a winning season in the National League, leading his team past the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and Arizona McCains. He lost in a close contest, 52% to 48%, to the Disney Angels, but Democrats in Washington D.C. and around the country believe "he has the stuff" to overtake and dominate the GOPs. "Baker is quiet, resourceful, purposeful, focused and he's oriented to family and kids," said one Democrat party organizer. "Given his record this past season, we're confident that if he'd been in charge for this election, we would've won in Georgia and Missouri. Cleland would've beaten Saxby-Chambliss, and Carnahan would've beaten Jesse James," the organizer said. GOP party officials guffawed upon hearing the news. "He's a loser. They replace a loser with a loser. We're winners. Winners, winners, winners!," said one GOP organizer. "You win some, you lose some. Overall, he's got a winning record, and he's the only one with a card," Democrat strategists retorted. Baker's politics are unknown, which, according to some party officials, makes him perfect for the job. "The politics of the Democrat party, as a party, are unknown. Who better?" said one party official. Baker won't officially begin until the Congress convenes, if it convenes, in January. But sources say he's already started working the phones, sizing up the talent, organizing his roster, picking starters and relievers. "We need a shortstop and a power-hitter," Baker reportedly said upon taking the job. Roger Chafee, a shortstop with the GOP, might be available if he decides to become a free agent. And Bonds might join Baker with the Dems as a power hitter, sources said. |
