BUSH ACCUSES VETERANS OF ALLIANCE WITH TERRORISTS Veterans' Leaders Arrested by Michael Adler Special Correspondent from the Gainesville Daily Statement Atlanta - (GDS) - The Justice Department today arrested alledged ringleaders of the three largest veterans organizations in the US in its latest roundup of suspected terrorists. Clues that the groups might be involved in terrorist activities stemmed from a budget disagreement, according to Justice Dept. officials. President Bush’s budget proposal called for cuts of 25 billion dollars in veterans affairs funding for benefits like medical care, pensions, and disability compensation. Veterans groups fought back in congress against Bush’s proposed cuts and actually won increased funding from the congressional veterans affairs committees. In an address to congress, President Bush said "I said before that you’re either with us or you’re with the terrorists. In the debate over VA funding, the veterans clearly showed what side they were on." He asked congress for additional funds to fight the growing terrorist threat from veterans. "They are well trained in the use of all kinds of weapons," he declared. To back up his claims, Bush cited a list of atrocities committed by soldiers who became veterans including the massacre of Lakota at Wounded Knee for failure to stop dancing, the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the massacre of South Korean civilians at No Gun Ree, and the massacre of Vietnamese civilians in My Lai. Those arrested include Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander in Chief Ray Sisk, American Legion National Commander Ronald F. Conley, and National Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Edward R. Heath Sr. The suspects were designated "illegal enemy combatants" by Attorney General Asscrack, and are being held without charge in INS detention facilities. Also arrested was the president of the Paralyzed Veterans Association, Joseph Fox Sr., A Federal grand jury handed down a 50 count indictment against him for raising money for terrorists. The Justice Dept froze the assets of the PVA’s spinal chord research foundation, which claims to have raised over $30 million for spinal cord research. The indictment claims much of that money actually went to Al Qaeda and may have helped fund the attacks on 9/11 or the raid on the Federal Arsenal at Harper's Ferry. Fox’s lawyer called the indictment "a work of fiction." The Justice Dept. also shut down the National Home for Children. This supposed charity was actually a front group for the VFW. At the culmination of the VA budget hearings, VFW Chief Sisk said "When the chips are down, that’s when you get to know who your true friends are, there is no doubt Chairman Smith is a friend of America’s veterans." House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Chris Smith has been ordered not to leave the country, pending the outcome of an investigation into his ties to veteran terrorism. House minority leader Dick Gephardt demanded Smith’s resignation and attacked his lack of patriotism, adding "I’m supposed to be the leader of the opposition party, but even I know not to disagree with the president" Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said "It’s surprising to think that these people were running around right under our noses, even gaining respected positions in American society, just waiting for the order to strike. These arrests are just another indication of how well the USA PATRIOT act is working. Thankfully we got them before they had a chance to attack." |
