OSCARS WILL BE CENSORED
No Anti-War Comments: If You Want To Send A Message, Go To Western-Union
Hollywould - (GNS)
- Producers of the Academy Awards-TM announced yesterday there will be no anti-war comments allowed.
"This is not censorship, this is business," said George Orwell, one of the producers.
Anti-war stars including Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, and the Dixie Chicks will not be among the presenters.
"Michael Caine and The Quiet American will not win, it's clearly an anti-war film," said Orwell.
Orwell denied that there was a blacklist.
"There is no blacklist. There never has been a blacklist. It's just that some of these people have gone to meetings, affiliated with certain people, said certain things publicly, and are, well, known.
"Besides, television must not be used to debate these issues," Orwell said. "It is too important a medium, and this is too important a night."
Orwell suggested anti-war protests should be held in the streets. The National League of Mayors responded they should not be in the streets, but could be in the parks. The National Leage of Parks Commissioners said they would prefer protests not occur in the parks, but could perhaps be held on the steps to government buildings. The National League of Supervisors Of Steps of Government Buildings said protests should not occur there, but maybe they could be in the parking lots on Sundays. The National League of Parking Lot Managers said they would convene to discuss this in August. They did issue an interim statement suggesting that Church parking lots be used on Saturdays, because municipal parking lots are often used seven days a week.
Orwell said the focus of the Academy Awards-TM ceremonies will be on gowns, "as it should be", and winners.
A statement issued by the Blacklisted Stars & Awards Presenters read in part, "Does Jesus want this war?"
Others in the industry have pointed out that war is good for business and the absence of a good war since Vietnam has lead to a dearth of good war movies.
"We need a good war to generate some good war movies. Opposing this war is just not thinking ahead," said one producer.
Orwell's decision came within a week after China announced it would censor the Rolling Stones.
